]]> (Kimberly Standish Photography) https://www.kimberlystandishphotography.com/blog/2020/4/its-all-in-the-way-you-look-at-it Sun, 05 Apr 2020 01:36:35 GMT Light your flame and let it lead you to your happy place https://www.kimberlystandishphotography.com/blog/2020/3/in-this-time-of-darkness During times of darkness...light your flame and find your happy place.  My camera has always been my escape...behind the lens is definitely a happy place...but in a very very literal way.  It is imperative to recognize that happiness comes from within us.  We won't find an object, a person or a physical place where it exists.  If you find your passion...then let that passion ignite the flame that guides you.  Follow your heart.  You may be isolated but you don't have to feel alone.  Connect with others.  Spend time doing things that you value...with people that you love...even if it is on the phone.  A month ago I felt like I didn't have enough time in the day to create new art.  Now I find myself incredibly grateful to have time.  I can't change what is happening in the world right now but it is within my power to stay home.  I have time to meditate, create, catch up with family and friends.  The way I socialize is certainly different but my relationships have not changed.  Be a giver.  Volunteer.  Find a group of people with like interests and teach them a new skill.  To Brooke Shaden...thank you for being a light in the world for other artists.  Thank you for being an example of how compassion for others can change the world...one step at a time.  One life at a time.

We need to use our sense of wisdom rather than worry over things beyond our control.  Seek information but don't allow it to trigger fears.  For some of us, this is easier said than done.  While many of us are self isolating inside the protective walls our our own little nests, we need to know we are not alone.  Make a phone call, check on a friend, family member or neighbor.  Spread the love during these trying and frustrating times.  Whatever you do...don't panic.  Rest your mind.  Ease your soul.

**Side Note...This was not the image I set out to create on this beautiful morning.  While I was shooting...a deer walked through my frame.  Sometimes in life... things unfold the way they are supposed to.  In Buddhism, deer symbolically represent harmony, happiness, peace and longevity ...leaving me to believe that this was no coincidence.  It worked out just the way it was supposed to.

I was faced with the choice of creating my own healthy world...or dying in the toxic world that I felt trapped in. 

It was my choice, but I had no other.  I had to walk away.  It wasn't getting better and couldn't get worse.  I tried, I stayed, I tried again.

I had to move on.  I had to heal.  I had to focus on something beyond the only thing I knew...being isolated, broken, and in a constant state of survival mode. 

I had to begin again...

So...I decided to change my perspective...I decided that each day was a new opportunity to be grateful for the positive things in life.  I refused to be a victim.  I decided that...although I couldn't change my past...I could certainly focus on what's ahead.

I took things day by day...each one a new opportunity.

I had to remember who I was, learn from where I came from, and look ahead to my next creation.

Trees are complex and symbolic.  Trees are self sufficient.  They are producers. They make their own food and provide nourishment for others.   They are both a new beginning and an eternal resting place.  They are nurturing, harmonious and majestic.  Trees are life.  Trees are breath.  They shed their soul season after season and are reborn bigger, better, stronger and wiser. 

They are rooted deep in the earth, they stand tall against the wind, they do not fear the rain and they provide protection in a storm.  They are shelter and support.  They represent family, fertility, love, strength and stability.   Trees are energy. Trees are noble.  Without them we would not survive. 

To some, a tree is just a tree.  To me, a tree is complex and symbolic.  Either way....appreciate trees for what they mean to you,  but most importantly...do your best to be a like a tree.
